John J. Sullivan
The Unbought and Unbossed Candidate for Lieutenant Governor
John J. Sullivan is a lifelong resident of Winchester, MA, a devoted husband, and a man with decades of experience getting the job done in both the public and private sectors.
Born and raised in Winchester, John graduated from Winchester High School. He earned a degree in chemical engineering from Villanova University in 1961, and an advanced degree in 1963 from the Oak Ridge post-graduate school of Nuclear Engineering. John served with the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission for five years. The death of his father brought John back to his native Winchester, where he was able to devote more of his attention and energy to his family.
Not long after returning to his hometown, John "threw his hat in the ring" to begin his political career by running for a seat on the Winchester Board of Selectmen. He was elected Selectman at age 28, and went on to serve on the Winchester board for nine years. Afterwards, John was elected as Town Moderator, and has served in that capacity for twenty-eight years.
John Sullivan went to work for Charles T. Main, a utilities and engineering firm, in 1966, and advanced to the position of President and Director. During the US/Iran tribunal conucted at The Hague, John represented his firm to negotiate a settlement with Iran. John also served as the President and CEO of Wheelabrator Environmental, Inc., and Perland Environmental, Inc.
At age 54, after years of leadership successes in the energy and engineering industries, John enrolled at Boston College and began work on a law degree. A member of the Massachusetts Bar since his graduation in 1997, John now practices law at Hall and Sullivan, a Winchester-based firm specializing in estate planning, property, and business law.
A lifelong Democrat, John was excited by the prospects of Christy Mihos' independent candidacy for governor. Cities and towns throughout Massachusetts have been starved by the Commonwealth. Speaking about the effects of financial strain on Winchester, John says, "it's painful to watch a 'Triple-A' community dig into their reserves." Christy's program to increase local aid, Proposition One, caught John's attention immediately. Hoping to join Christy in his fight for Massachusetts' cities and towns, John took the first steps towards establishing himself as this year's independent candidate for Lieutenant Governor: "I got myself disenrolled, and I gave him a shout, and we talked."
Throughout his business and legal career, John has maintained continuous service to the town of Winchester. He currently serves as Town Moderator, Chairman of the Winchester Cooperative Bank, Trustee of the John and Mary Educational Foundation, and member of the Winchester Hospital Foundation Board. John Sullivan lives in Winchester with his wife, Leah.
Along with his professional expertise, John Sullivan brings an independent-minded passion for local politics and the ability to get things done to the Mihos/Sullivan campaign.
